SAY GOODBYE TO GOPRO, Family Footage just became more enjoyable thanks to the OSMO pocket.
When the first OSMO came to market several years ago, the compact solution offered extremely smooth motion with vast controls to acquire the perfect shot. The first OSMO gave creators a unique platform to capture footage in a whole new way with features like finger tip motion control. The stability of aerial gimbals came to terrestrial cameras – yet you could still control the camera from another room or mount the camera to a vehicle for Hollywood grade smoothness. And now, we have the Osmo Pocket – an ultra-portable stabilized camera that captures 4k 60p footage with its 12mp camera. Check out their awesome features.
Don’t confuse a gimbal camera (Osmo) with a stabilized sensor. GoPro’s are not gimbal stabilized. Rather they use an almost software like solution that will still showcase bumpy results.
To be clear, this isn’t a GoPro -this is the camera that will KILL the GoPro. Everyone hates watching your bumpy family GoPro footage. Yet, have you ever wondered why aerial footage is so mesmerizing? Sure, the view from above is unreal, but the smooth stability of the camera gliding through the air does make it so much easier to watch.
No, camera’s with a stabilized sensor are not as smooth as the OSMO pocket. Even cameras that boast a stabilized sensor will not compete with a camera like the Osmo pocket. A stabilized sensor can only correct 15-20 degrees on the roll axis.
5 Reasons Why the Osmo Pocket Will Kill the GoPro
- Stability
- GoPro hypes the hypersmooth video on the new Hero 7, calling it gimbal like stabilization without a gimbal. Well unfortunately, most experienced videographers can spot a warp stabilization added to video in post-processing.
- With the Osmo Pocket, a physical and mechanical gimbal is actually stabilizing the camera with far greater degree of range. A stabilized sensor typically has a roll limit and pitch limit that will only stabilize a 10-15 degree movement. With a gimbal, we have a far greater degree of movement to counteract your moving and shakin!

- Intelligent Camera Features
- With Active Track, the Osmo pocket now acts like the soloshot camera, able to track subjects and autonomously move the camera to follow the motion of the subject. This particular feature was typically only available on DJI drones.
- Motion Lapse mode on the Osmo Pocket
- Typically GoPros have been known to be a fast and easy way to collect timelapses to add an extra shot into any video. With the Osmo Pocket, now we can have a moving timelapse. Smooth motion control from the gimbal allows for a dynamic movement to take your timelapses to the next level.
- Story Mode
- With more and more vloggers shooting in vertical mode, the OSMO pocket can plug into any iPhone and shoot vertical video in story mode – making your stories as buttery smooth as your productions without overshooting your budget. Moreover, you can do away with clunky workflow of getting video from one device to Instagram for example.
- Imagine cutting new videos together seamlessly – MIMO will do that for you.
- Autonomous Photo Features
- Autonomously capture and create Pano’s right from the menu of the OSMO pocket. How would you actually acquire that shot with a GoPro, let alone have a straight horizon line for each pano?
The original Osmo was a personal favorite of mine. One of my best videos of all time was shot on the Osmo with an Osmo. (Still, 5 unique ways to use the osmo) In fact, the Osmo was my go to camera when I started shooting real estate almost 6 years ago. The Osmo gave me crazy smooth motion with ultra flexibility. It just didn’t have adjustable aperture. Even on a recent trip to Hawaii, my go to camera was the Osmo. I could literally get smooth shots where I just couldn’t hold a Ronin MX or mount a heavy camera. I could travel with just the Osmo and a Mavic Pro – a powerhouse combination for efficient filmmakers.
Now the Osmo Pocket has been released, and frankly I couldn’t be more excited as a creator. Right now, I am trying to hold back on all the unique situations and combinations of camera motions that could be captured with the Osmo pocket. The Osmo pocket packs features that you can’t even acquire on the Ronin-S.
One of the greatest features of the Osmo original was its ability to control the camera from the application on your phone – the view, the live camera feed and and even the motion with your fingertips. You could slow down the motion and truly create amazing smooth footage from previously unused angles. I loved mounting the Osmo to windows in houses and then walk out of the room and capture my HGTV shots. Now with the Osmo pocket, acquiring these smooth b-roll shots is even easier as the small form factor will allow you to put the Osmo pocket in various places.
The Osmo pocket will really take efficient film-making to a whole new level. Let’s look at the news. Typically the news was known for high quality content, but has taken a nosedive after the birth of YouTube in 2005. News agencies are yet to understand the importance of quality of content versus film quality. Either way, the Osmo Pocket would be a powerful tool for even the most novice reporters to create smooth b-roll and transition shots for their stories. Maybe now the news will have shots that we’ve come to expect from lifestyle producers on YouTube. Yes, News – you’re lazy and your footage sucks, and it will get better with this device. NBC News already uses the Osmo on all sorts of national news bits with “Rossen reports.” You can even see the shadow of the device in footage.
Why Does the Osmo Pocket Excite Me?
- For vloggers and bloggers, capturing epic footage just got a whole lot cheaper
- For professional videographers, creating fast content just became really easy as well
- In-App motion control for buttery smooth footage
- Possible to mount the Pocket on vehicles, in the office and around job sites
- Stabilized body camera footage for drone flying or law enforcement
The OSMO Pocket is $349.00 and available today. Frankly, I’ll probably be buying multiple Osmo Pockets to see how they can be used together. Order yours today here
